Our Shepherd Lutheran Child Care is Hiring an Early Childhood Assistant Teacher Near Birmingham, MI

EARLY CHILDHOOD ASSISTANT TEACHER

As an Early Childhood Assistant Teacher, you will be responsible for assisting the Lead Teacher to implement age-appropriate lesson plans and employing positive-redirection techniques. You will be a vital part of our team delivering a solid foundation for the future success of the children in our care, and play an integral part in their social, emotional and academic development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Teacher will assist the Lead Teacher to implement lesson plans, including (pre-written) Jesus Time lessons and assist in classroom activities and maintaining classroom routines and schedules. Other duties include:

  • Provide care, nurture, and assess children in developmentally appropriate positive interactions
  • Help with the supervision and management of daily class functions of a group of children to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of the children
  • Work with classroom staff
  • Ensure a safe and clean classroom environment
  • Communicate and build connections with families, staff, and the administrative team
  • Interact professionally with families, staff, and the administrative team
  • Maintain staff to student ratios at all times in your classroom or other classrooms if needed
  • Complete minimum 16 clock training hours per year (all can be completed online and on demand)
  • Attend staff meetings, workshops and/or school functions as needed (4 to 6 a year)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position is task-oriented and requires from the candidate a positive, Christ-centered, patient attitude when interacting with children, families, and other staff.

  • Physically able to care and interact with young children
  • Lifting: lift up to 30 lbs unassisted; raising or lowering an object from one level to another
  • Carrying: holding/rocking up to 20 lbs to assist in child care activities (bottle-feeding, soothing, etc.)
  • Standing: remaining on one's feet in an upright position without moving about for an extended period while leading activities and assisting other camp counselors
  • Walking: moving about on foot, leading children to different activities
  • Sitting: capable of getting into and out of a seated position on the floor

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS NEEDED

This position is task-oriented and requires from the candidate a positive, Christ-centered, patient attitude when interacting with children, families and other staff.

The ideal candidate will be a team player who is fun-loving and feels comfortable working in a Christ-centered child care center. Has a passion for working in early childhood education and wants to be involved in shaping young children’s social, emotional and academic development.

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Physically able to care and interact with young children
  • Must be available to work Monday through Friday year round (minus holidays and center closings)
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Complete and pass a tuberculosis/health screening within 30 days of employment
  • Submit to and pass a background check
  • Meet and follow all Michigan State Licensing requirement for Child Care Centers, including completing the required 16 clock training hours per year
  • Maintain an overall professional appearance
  • 1-2 years in a child care or preschool setting (Preferred, but not required)
  • CPR and First Aid Certified (Preferred but not required)
  • CDA, Associate or equal experience and education in Early Childhood Education or a Child Related Degree (Preferred but not required)

Pay is based on candidate's years of experience working in a licensed daycare and/or education in child development/early childhood.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: From $14.50 per hour

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • No nights
  • No weekends
